Sports Names in the News

Sports play an active role in Danes’ lives each day and throughout their lifetimes. At a ceremony in early 2013, Danish racing cyclist Lasse Norman Hansen was named “Sports Name of 2012”. He had an amazing year, starting with winning a bronze medal in Australia in April 2012 and going on to win a gold medal during the Summer Olympics 2012 in London. Winners of this top Danish sports award the past 10 years include:

2010: Caroline Wozniacki (tennis)
2009: Lotte Friis (swimming)
2008: Danish national men’s Handball team
2007: Mads Rasmussen & Rasmus Quist (rowing)
2006: Mikkel Kessler (boxing)
2005: Tom Kristensen (motorsport)
2004: ’Guldfireren’ (rowing)
2003: Nicki Pedersen (speedway)
2002: Tom Kristensen (motorsport)

In addition, the city of Aalborg was awarded the prize as “Sports Community of the Year 2012” during the big gala event on January 5, 2013, ahead of Slagelse and Roskilde, which were also nominated.
